DONDI WHITE
DONDI WHITE

USA. The legendary Graffiti Artist from Brooklyn, NYC was born Donald Joseph White. He was one of the dominant forces in the NYC graffiti scene in the 70’ and 80’s and later went on to gain worldwide fame. He is one of the artists responsible for bridging the gap between graffiti and contemporary art with his unique style. His artwork incorporates characters, letters, and has an architectural element with very intentional lines and designs often creating them in the style of blueprints. Dondi also tagged artwork as “BUS 129”, “NACO”, “PRE” and a few other monikers. He created masterpieces on subways in NYC having painted elaborate pieces that encompassed multiple cars that required a great deal of time, patience and planning to create. This was indeed impressive as at that time the NYC MTA was cracking down on all the graffiti that was covering the city and especially the subways which were a prize as they are essentially moving canvas highlighting the artist work throughout the city as they moved. His transition to the gallery scene came as the city was cleaning up trains and graffiti fast. So along with a few other now legendary artists such as Haring, Basquiat, Futura, Fab 5 Freddy and few others he moved to painting works for exhibition in galleries. His artwork is now in museum collections. Dondi is considered to be a graffiti pioneer and street art legend.
